Kuniyuki Takahashi: Early Tape Works (1986-93) Vol.1 Vinyl LP

I don’t think there’s ever been, or will ever be, a better time for lovers of obscure Japanese music than right now. For Kuniyuki Takahashi‘s Early Tape Works collection, Music From Memory dive into a trove of private press cassette releases inspired by the Mule Musiq deep house mainstay’s early forays into electronic music after discovering the world of nightclubs in Japan in 1983. These are his experiments making music “not as such made for nightclubs, but certainly inspired by them” recorded utilizing an enviable (by today’s standards) arsenal of Roland Juno60, TR-606, TB-303, Casio FZ-1 and Korg 770 to create deeply textured ambient works consistent with MFM’s archival tributes to Gigi Masin, Suso Saiz, Joan Bibiloni et all, and on the level with whatever your YouTube algorithm is currently serving up. Tracks like “Signifie” and “You Should Believe” hint at the futuristic brand of house music he would hone later on, and “Drawing Seeds” and “Zero To One” display a stunning amount of individuality for an artist who was only just getting started. Recommended.
