Vinnie Paz and Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind are Jedi Mind Tricks, and the Philly duo’s 1997 debut, The Psycho-Social, Chemical, Biological & Electro-Magnetic Manipulation of Human Consciousness, is back. The initial pressing was very limited, as was the 2013 reissue, and this clear vinyl 2018 re-release should be welcome news for underground rap fans. Dense, intelligent rhymes from Paz reference everything from ancient knowledge & astronomy to social conditions; despite the tough-to-comprehend subject matters, Paz’s genius on the mic is easy to appreciate, his raw flow, multisyllabic rhyme schemes, and versatility all doing wonders over Stoupe’s moody, fitting boom-bap instrumentals. JMT’s sophomore LP, Violent By Design, might perhaps be the group’s most beloved project, but Psycho-Social… is a cult classic in its own right, an original body of work showcasing two artists fully dedicated to their crafts.
