Goblin: Profondo Rosso Vinyl LP
Faithful 30th anniversary reissue of Profondo Rosso from Italy’s AMS label. They’ve gone ahead and pressed these up just like the original 1975 pressing, from the cover art down to the actual vinyl pressing plant (they actually use the same pressing plant as back in the day). Goblin only actually contributed two tracks here — the rest is a suitably Goblin-esque score by Giorgio Gaslini — but those two tracks alone are worth the price of admission. There’s the sinister, organ-fueled theme tune to Profondo Rosso (aka Deep Red, aka one of Argento’s finest hours) and the angular, uptempo “Death Dies.” Of Gaslini’s contributions, I’m most digging the jazz-funk vibes on side B, such as “Deep Shadows” and the aptly titled “Wild Session.” The disarming pair of trad jazz pieces at the end round it out nicely. 7 tracks. Recommended.
