Fu Manchu: Daredevil (Colored Vinyl) Vinyl LP
It was no surprise when Fun Manchu opened for Monster Magnet on New Jersey band’s 1995 tour. Not only were the members of the East Coast stoner rock band some of Fu Manchu’s biggest fans, the San Clemente band’s sound was deeply indebted to them. Daredevil was not quite as Black Sabbath influenced as their early work was, but it was filled with fuzzed out, guitar heavy hooks. They borrow a little from Grand Funk and Blue Cheer, while refraining from too many pyrotechnics. Lead guitarist Eddie Glass uses his instrument as a foil for singer Scott Hill’s nonchalant vocals and backing guitar. The lyrics don’t get to far out, they just seem to recount the things that the band is into. It’s a fun ride that is well worth hopping on.
