Frankie Cutlass: Puerto Rico / Boriquas On The Set Vinyl 7″
Talk about a banger, one of the biggest party anthems from the ’90s is now on 7″ thanks to All City Records. The first time I heard this track was probably on Funk Flex’s The Mix Tape Vol. 1: 60 Minutes of Funk, and when I was able to get my hands on the 12″ many years later, mostly likely through Turntable Lab, I felt pretty good because no matter what the ethnic makeup of a party, “Puerto Rico” hit hard: talk about music bringing people together. And the song STILL SHUT DOWN! I recently saw a party boat sail by on the East River, and when the DJ dropped this song, the crowd erupted, I mean, they really went nuts since I wasn’t even on the boat, and I was able to hear them. It’s a brilliantly simple record built on a vocal snippet from DJ Grand Wizard Theodore’s Live Convention ’82 (side a), and the b-side features the street classic, “Boriquas On Da Set.” It would make a lot of sense to drop these songs one after another (“100%” would be another solid choice) or just to cut the record up like Flex does on aforementioned tape, so make sure to cop doubles!
