ESG: Step Off (Colored Vinyl) Vinyl LP
ESG’s 2002 album repressed. Originally made up of sisters Reneee, Valerie, and Marie, the trio has added their 2 daughters, Chistelle and Nicole, to the lineup. If you are not familiar with ESG, they were a highly influential no-wave band that crossed over into hip-hop and dance with classics such as “UFO” and “Moody.” Although this was their first album in more than ten years, ESG stayed true to their signature sound: snappy drums, minimal composition, and Renee’s 80s style vocals. The only major change in the sound is that they slowed the tempo to more of a standard speed (they used to be fast as hell) and with the tempo change comes a more controlled sound (although the recklessness of the earlier recordings was a strength). Checkout “Six Pack,” the beautifully melodic guitar riff sets up the drum and bass nicely. The darker “Talk It” works equally as well, again starting with the guitar riff and continuing with their instrumental blend. Conversely, “My Street,” which was released as a promo 45, and “Step Off” sound like lost tracks from their 80s heyday. A surprising hit, fans of ESG won’t be disappointed. Seven tracks in all. Released by Fire Records on pink vinyl housed in a full color sleeve with a printed inner sleeve and a digital download.
