Don Blackman: Don Blackman LP
Don Blackman’s self-titled LP from 1982 is a staple digger record, being sampled numerous times by everyone from DJ Jazzy Jeff, Jay-Z, Slum Village, and Madlib, but that’s not why you need this record – you need it ’cause it’s a damn good album! The whole thing has such a great vibe to it – a rare blend of funk, jazz fusion, and soul – that could have only been made at this perfect time in space. Check the soulful grooves of “Hearts Desire,” and “Holding You, Loving You,” or the bold, bassy funk of “Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide,” “Never Miss A Thing,” “Yabba Dabba Doo” and “You Ain’t Hip.” Strangely, it’s the only record released under Don Blackman’s name, even though he appeared on many albums in the 70’s and early 80’s from Weldon Irvine, Lenny White, Tom Browne, and Bernard Wright. Comes in that iconic pic sleeve. We miss you Mr. Blackman. Recommended.
