Cam’ron: The Program (Colored Vinyl) Vinyl LP
“I never was a rapper, mayne / I’m a get money n****, I do this for leisure (fun).” The Program is Cam’ron’s first full-length project in 4 years, and the Harlemite retains his trademark style. Flashy, laidback rhymes are delivered over maximalist beats reminiscent of those that backed Cam’s earlier works (Just Blaze, AraabMUZIK both contribute), and the album showcases a veteran in the game w/ nothing to prove; he is simply having fun, making music for “leisure” and nothing more. There are things Cam needs to address, however. We get a glimpse of the Dipset member’s mischievous side on “It’s Killa,” as he takes a jab at fellow Harlem representative Mase: “Then Mase called, said ‘yo, I’m stuck inside some bitch’s house / Her boyfriend at the door, could I hurry up and get him out.'” On “Hello,” Cam goes bar for bar with rising New York City wordsmith Don Q, reminding fans of his mastery of punchlines. Other highlights include “Lean,” Cam’s rags-to-riches story backed by a children’s choir singing Bill Withers’s “Lean,” and the anthemic “D.I.A.,” on which the rapper shows off his unique flow and outrageous wit.
