Blackcash & Theo: Galaxy Vol.20 (John Klemmer, Ray Bryant) Vinyl 7″
The trusty edit duo of Blackcash & Theo take on two jazz funk classics for Volume 20 of the Galaxy series. First up is Ray Bryan’ts “Up Above The Rock,” originally released in 1968 and trading for a lot of money on record marketplaces. Kool G Rap & DJ Polo’s sampled the song for 1992’s “On The Run (Untouchable Version),” and B & T respectfully touch up the crisp drum breaks (sampled by Roni Size, Attica Blues, The Wiseguys, etc.) + piano & brass brilliance for heightened dancefloor impact. On the flip is the unhinged greatness of John Klemmer’s “Free Soul.” It’s also a producer fav, and most people might remember Akinyele’s “Exercise” lifting the bassline from the track. Once again, B & T put their editing chops to work for a tasteful, DJ-friendly version.
