It exists as a celebration of the wave of independence that swept the African continent in the second half of the 20th century and showcases its musical diversity. Everything is of high quality, from early North African rai to classical Egyptian music and the rumba of the Congo. The scope of the project is large, but the curators did a masterful job. They keep an ear towards the celebratory feeling of independence rather than the disaffected youth of today.
