Sophomore studio album from Australia’s Dead Can Dance. Spleen and Ideal was originally recorded in 1985 at Woodbine Studios in Warwickshire, England. The sound of the album is a transition from the post punk and gothic influences of their debut towards the neoclassical darkwave that would define the duo’s career. They draw on medieval European sounds, but completely recontextualize them. The effect is that of an ancient religious service bring brought into the modern era. It’s dark and haunting, and hints at an unending vastness at times. Released by 4AD on black vinyl.
